High St/Water Lane redevelopment
Congestion and traffic problems
Water Lane is an unlovely alleyway but
without it
traffic from the Eastern end of the town wishing to use the car park
will be forced to choose between turning right at the Kings Road
traffic lights and Lower Kings Road to Greene Field Road or turning
down Castle Street into Mill Street and through the middle of the
Collegiate School or down Castle street, past the station and into
Lower Kings Road from the northern end. The only option for large
vehicles is the traffic lights because there is a narrow bend in Mill
Street and a weight limit on the canal bridge in Castle Street.
Most of the people we have spoken to in
our own
consultation in the market in July say they would use the shortest
route via the traffic lights.
This will certainly greatly increase the congestion in the High Street
and in Lower Kings Road.
There are times during the day when
Lower Kings Road
lights may have only a handful of vehicles waiting but for much of the
day the queue reaches to the Waitrose entrance and in the morning,
evening and school rushes the traffic backs up over the canal bridge.
Before the traffic lights were altered it was common for the back up to
reach past the railway station and block the exit under the Brownlow
Road Bridge. To go back to such conditions would be intolerable.
Some form of road access from the High
Street is
essential to prevent the town from becoming damagingly congested
