Berkhamsted
High St/Water Lane redevelopment
Alternative proposals
We do not wish to be negative about
plans to improve
our town. We make the following suggestions which would go some way to
meeting our objections.
Leave the supermarket where is it but
extend it back
into the car park and west across Water Lane to give the area required.
The underground parking under the whole building would go some way to
replacing the car parking spaces covered. (There is road subsidence
over the sewer in Water Lane which suggests that it needs
attention). The solid facade of the
building would be
hidden in part from the High Street like the present Tesco and would
not need to be artificially divided to fit in.
This would leave a small triangular
“square”, where Water Lane now crosses the footpath
from
the High Street, which would be part of the market and would
be a
safe place for the town Christmas tree which is too near to the road at
present
Move Water Lane westwards, possibly
opposite the
entrance to Greene Field Rd to give a one way road into, through and
out of the car park. This would of course divide the market but the
market is already divided by the entrance to Water Lane into
first and second class pitches. It would in fact benefit the
market and enable it to flourish if the division were nearer the middle.
Make corresponding alterations to the
depth of the other buildings to re-balance the parking.
Build in “green”
measures from the start to cut running costs and reduce environmental
impact.
