LIBDEMS HAND-IN PETITION
Our October "Focus" leaflet carried a a petition asking the
Borough Council to delay its decision on the Water Lane plan until the
public had a chance to read the results of the Public Consultation
exercise.
This consultation report was only published 4 days before the cabinet
was due to make a decision. We asked for 21 days.
We were pleased to find that 381 people took the trouble to sign our
petition and deliver it to us. Town-Mayor Freda Earl presented it at
the Cabinet meeting.
We claimed that the public consultation was inadequate because only 210
people responded. We pointed to the fact that the exhibition was not
open on Saturdays, thus excluding all the people who work out of the
town. In dismissing our objections Ian Reay, Berkhamsted
resident
and member of the Cabinet, said he was satisfied with the level of
response.
The Council's own breakdown of its responses gave the
approval rating of the scheme as:
7% approved
52% part objection
41% total objection
We will continue to oppose the Council scheme and campaign for an
alternative that will meet the concerns of the town.
